Ohhhhh AleJANdroooo, mmmmm......

Oh, Sorry. Sara, were you saying something?

Matt

WOW Sara...you are up (Posting wise) early today! Marty never posted that early!! It's sure fun having a 2-way street (having YOU actually comment BACK to US on OUR comments!!)

I am REELING this morning...yesterday I just finalized what we call a "Short Fused travel assignemnt"..I am flying to the Cape (Canaveral) on Monday for the next 3 weeks...I fly back on the 25th, which JUST SO HAPPENS to be Stage 5 (Time Trial in Solvang) of the TOC! ACK!! GASP!! WTFO?? (a military acronym there, which I won't go into online..but you can prob guess). I am stunned...my great plans for catching 3 stages has gone to he!! in a handbasket! The best I'll be able to do is catch the start of Stage 6 in Santa Barbara. I'm crushed! Devastated! Emotionally wrecked even! Today is gonna be a tough day as I digest this horrid development! (on a plus note, I plan on taking my road bike, and plan to ride ALL OVER Cape Canaveral after work and on weekends)...I hear the roads out there (off base) are VERY DANGEROUS..so I plan to stay on base. But being so HUGE I should have lots of safe (albiet FLAT) miles to ponder what I'm missing back home!

I was just reminiscing over last years TOC. My brother drove up and we caught the riders twice on the same stage (missed the third sighting by mere moments due to slow traffic). I got a great shot of the race leaders as they descended into Santa Barbara...Team Disco in the lead as they were rounding a turn. You can clearly see BIG GEORGE H. (w/ his stylin' sunglasses)! He was my MAN all last year, and I was really rooting for him to win some races. To me he is the poster-child of what a pro-cyclist should be. Look up 'CLASS ACT' in a cycling dictionary, you should see HIS picture! Totally an AMATEUR shot (my little pocket digital) but hey..it's MY shot! I was so close that if any rider had wiped out on the turn, we would have been buddies in the hospital! Love that sound as the peleton zips by! Really gets me JAZZED for the season!

Matt

And BTW, you ladies totally crack me up! I LOVE IT!

Theresa

Oh, man Matt, I FEEL for you!!
The day that the dates were announced for the Tour of MO, I turned in my vacation request...nobody's taking that away from me....
They better be paying you big bucks for this trip!!

Regarding the Tour of Qatar; my calender for Feb has two shots from last year; Stuy O'Grady making friends with a camel, and a Quick-Step rider wanting a wheel change, standing in the desert, looking deserted!
Thank you Sara, for your kind words. And to revise my podium for ToC, as I went to sleep last night I thought about how COOL it would be for Levi to win!!

Sara Best

Theresa, I have the SAME calendar in my office at work!!

Maybe that's what inspired me to write about Alejandro today - he was January's pic and today we have to say goodbye.

susie b

Ohhhh noooo, Matt! Were you "Born Under a Bad Sign" or what?! Can you tell I was listening to a LOT of Blues last week? Such as BB King's "How Blue Can You Get", "Every Day I Have the Blues", "The Thrill is Gone", & the completely accurate "Call it STORMY MONDAY". But don't worry, by Friday, I'd started to play "Let the Good Times Roll"... Yeah, I love me some Blues...

But back to you Matt, I feel for you & am selfishly feeling sorry for myself as we all would have greatly enjoyed hearing your reports. :( You are right about George being a class act (although I have to disagree on the shades...). I think I may have cheered louder for him in 2005 when he won that stage than for even any of Lance's stage wins!

By the way, is Predictor Lotto coming to TOC & if so, is Robbie McEwen? I didn't like him much until last year (thought he was obnoxious), but then OLN interviewed him a bunch of times during the 2006 Tour & he was so well-spoken & funny, that I've changed my opinion. What do you all think of him? He kills me how he darts into "holes" no one else sees!

Theresa

I love Robbie McEwen! In 2005 he bugged me cause he was always in Tom Boonen's way, but I've come to love him over the last year!

Update on the Tour of Langkawi, Brad Huff is there with Team Slipstream and monkeys are everywhere!! And they have brown water in the hotel...yuck...rather vivid pictures of one of his teammates brushing his teeth(surely not!!) with brown water....!! He said it was like that for 2 days!

Camille

Susie, I just got a few glimpses of Robbie McEwen's personality on the 2005 TdF video... I couldn't decide if he was strictly obnoxious or whether he might grow on me as charmingly self-aggrandizing a la the young... dang... I wanna say Cassius Clay and I'm blanking on his name now!! Alzheimer's here I come!!! Oh yeah Muhammad Ali! Whew. Scared myself. But I think Robbie's kinda funny, and that makes him okay in my book. For now, unless I decide again that he's just plain obnoxious.

CMehl

The fact that Rocket Robbie named his kid Ewen McEwen should tell you something about the bloke!!!

Theresa

lol, Cathy I'd forgotten that about Robbie's son!! I just remember him on the podium in full kit, (pint-size) so cute!!

Theresa

Oh, I forgot to comment on Sara's new lovely picture!! Very nice.

Matt

I also hope Levi can pull off the TOC win. Hopefully he will be DC's man for that race.

I always love the sprint finishes...they are so OUT OF CONTROL! I can hardly believe how fast they can go...and yes, R.M. is one slippery sprinter...comes seemingly from nowhere and wins by a wheel, again and again!

I have another work- trip coming up this spring (besides the Cape trip): heading off to England for 4 weeks...it WAS mid Apr thru mid-May but that JUST CHANGED (boy are things FLUID around here!)...now it's mid-May to mid- June...also planning on taking the bike. So now, if it can just shift a bit farther off...lets say coming home sometime mid-July'ish...then I could scoot to London for the TDF prologue on the 7th! No matter when the trip finally goes, I'm tenativly working on how to get over to France for even one day (WITH the bike), rent a car, and ride one of the TDF stages...just so I can say I did. I will also have to go over the UCI schedule and see where they are racing when I'm over...would be pretty cool to see a race on that side of the pond! So we shall see how this all pans out.

Unlike Martin, I pretty much DREAD air travel (I'm betting he's in first class though..while I fly in the baggage-compartment). It's just SO not fun anymore (and scary too!) The 12 hour LA-London flight is a killer! I did the same trip last Sept/Oct...but didn't have my bike though. Maybe I'm getting old...whatever the reason, I sure would just like to 'appear' where I'm going without actually having to TRAVEL! (yes, I want my cake and eat it too!) Beam me OVER Scotty! And make it Snappy! I've got things to do!

Matt

oh, ditto on Theresa's comment on the new pic!

Camille

Another ditto here, Sara you are very pretty. And Cathy, you too! It's fun to see what people look like.

catherine

Before I finish reading the post and the comments, I just have to say, WOW, great pic honey!

susie b

I just saw that story on CNN where a 93 LB TUMOR was removed from a woman. It is not one of those cases where they knew about the tumor but didn't know how to remove it. No (!), the DOCTORS had been CLUELESS for "over a dozen years"!! HOW do you "MISS" a 93 freakin-pound tumor?! It is stories like this that tick me off all over again when people say ANY medical/scientific tests or procedures are "INFALLIBLE". Maybe "Nazi frogmen" were involved...

Matt

Suzie, that sounds like an X-File to me!!

"Over here Scully! Look...there's an Alien growing out of this lady!" "Ahh Mulder, thats not an Alien, it's that Webster guy (the little actor)...all 93lbs of him." "Gosh Scully..he sure looks like an Alien!"

catherine

Suze, keep on topic or you will get the boot! (jeeezus, crazy ass b**ch)

Theresa

I wonder how much this woman weighed in the first place, that a 93# tumor could be missed for so long! Nazi frogmen, for sure...and Catherine, the way you talk, girl!!

Matt,if I had to travel like that, I wouldn't have a job! But good luck with planning this summer!!

Camille

I just read about Jan giving a saliva sample today in Bonn, so they could possibly clear him by comparing the DNA with blood from the O.P. Spanish doc. Do you guys already know about this? It said he'd need a new license and then of course, a team, if he's cleared in time for the TdF. But oh man, I wish he would be! This may be old news, I don't know... if any of you do, inform me...

Theresa

Camille, some of the Jan story is old news. I can't remember why they didn't use the DNA they got when they searched his house during the honeymoon. I think his lawyers blocked it. But they've been haggling over the DNA test for a least a month or more. I think it's a good idea for Jan. They are being way harder on him than they were with Basso. And so far there are no charges against any cyclists. The whole thing is going to turn to dust, after they screwed up everyones' lives last year!!

Oh boy, Cycle Sport issue came in the mail today!!

Theresa

Does anyone except me remember an article in Cycle Sport or Velo News about a reality series in Europe, where they went to Kenya, I think, and assessed young men for pro-cycling training? They came up with about 12 riders, and 5 or 6 had a lot of promise. They rode as a developmental squad based in Belgium. I remember the guys were thrilled to get the chance, and the ones that made the cut were planning on staying in Belgium, they loved it there! To continue training and racing and see if the could get in the pro ranks. I know I'm not crazy, because I thought it was so cool! I can't remember if it was 2005 or 06. Cathy or Sara, do you remember??? Or does anyone else remember this?

catherine

Sorry guys. I have a virus, aliens made me do it, nazi frogmen, oh hell, I just have an uncontrollable mouth and say things I think are funny, then cross a line too far.

Mea culpa Suze. You KNOW how I feel about you! (a little Oprah moment in memory of Larry) :-)

catherine

PS Matt, you are a dear to come out here to play with us.....And you have such interesting things to say.

Camille

Sara, I realized that a few people made predictions for 2007 winners, but mostly we went off on tangents (quelle suprise) :) So I'm going to do what you asked and choose my TdF winner... except, sorry, it's Ivan Basso. You know, sometimes I just have to bend the rules, that's the way it goes. You can always send me to the principal, that's what my teachers usually did.
