I'm SO excited to see these articles in major newspapers finally! In the quote of Travis Tygart saying it's their policy not to discuss ongoing cases, I thought, "Oh REEEALLY??? And since when is this your policy? Since you finally realized that the answers might now incriminate you? I can just picture the arbitration panel in their behind-closed-doors meeting. I envision McCauley Culkin's face in home alone when he screams "AAAAAHHHH!!!!" I bet a transcript of that meeting would go something like, "OHHHH SHHHHIIIIIIT!!!!"

My hope is that Lance misspoke, though with his public appearance experience you'd expect more. It certainly a huge gaff since Floyd has not been officially disqualified! Not a real sign of support,eh? But perhaps he really meant to say that since Floyd's winning is in limbo, it's great to see fans still supporting the sport. Now that I think of it that's even more ridiculous because it suggests we don't support our "own" in times of duress (which Americans love to tout as a strength). Well, all round a pretty shabby comment... why didn't Bobke call him on it?

catherine

PS I just realized you were talking about BOB's hair, Hahahahaha! Yes Ma'am, I was thinking the same thing the first nightl his hair looks awful!

Amy

Not that this makes his quote sound any better, but do you think LA meant that no one would be interested in the sport since HE wasn't winning the TdF anymore? Maybe he'd had a few California microbrews and hadn't really thought it out.

Lance was only repeating what was said from the second he retired in 2005 & even throughout last year's TDF. Don't you remember the gleeful, snarky newspaper articles announcing that "Americans don't care" any more about cycling since Lance was gone - as "proved" by the drop in OLNs ratings & the lack of t-shirt wearing, foam-finger waving hordes of Americans along the TDF route?

I think Lance "caught himself" & realized he would sound too arrogant if he said the ratings were expected to drop after HIM, & made the substitution. I did think it was odd for him to say as he has publicly come out on Floyd's side since the beginning, but to tell the truth, I was too blinded by how HOT I thought he looked to really ponder it.... (I hang my head in shame).

Look, I have a "thing" for guys who are "all in black". Maybe I should join Britney in Rehab...

Camille

Amy, I bet that's what he really wanted to say but thought he was being modest by rephrasing it, without realizing he was dissing Floyd. I know he supports Floyd so I'm sure it was unintentional. And the fact is, during and just after Lance won his 7th TdF title, people definitely really WERE thinking and saying Americans would lose interest after he retired. It's just a very delayed comment from him maybe, and now he'll just have to rethink how to say it correctly, if he even says it at all. And later I heard him say he feels like a proud papa watching Americans still interested in cycling, which was his hope all along, that we'd get interested and *stay* interested. He tends to put his foot in his mouth but I think his heart was in the right place. (quelle surprise that I would think that, right?! :)

susie b

AMY! I just saw your comment (we must have been writing at the same time). We're thinking alike! Ohoh, NOW you're in trouble... :)

Camille

Susie, we were thinking and writing along the same lines, even on the hot men in black... I'll see you in rehab. Let's shave our heads like Britney!

Camille

Okay, this is getting ridiculous, these parallel entries!!! :)

Sara B

I think you're right. I think that he was referring to all the speculation that began once he announced his retirement around the idea that Americans wouldn't watch the sport anymore once he left. He didn't want to sound arrogant so he made the "American" substitute. I'm sure that he didn't mean too diss Floyd. I know that he has been an important supporter of Floyd's. Unlike me, he probably doesn't sit around analyzing these things.

And, as susie points out, I admit that I may too have been simply distracted by how incredibly gorgeous he is to really get what he was trying to say.

susie b

Camille - Maybe we can get a "group-rate" if all the other female "confessors" here come along...lol! (Although I'm not so keen on the Sinead O'Connor look).

And sorry Matt, GregC & woofdawg! I'll try to control myself & not make you do the eye-rolling, wince thing...

I know what you all might be thinking. With my admitted lust for men in all-black or gladiator outfits, is it "safe" that I'm out among "normal" people? Verdict's still not in... :)

Theresa

Okay, girls, as great as he looked, I caught that remark, and would have been more annoyed by the "faux paus", it wasn't that I KNOW he's one of Floyd's biggest supporters($$). I got the feeling that even tho the question was important, he was using some of the same canned remarks that he has stowed in his brain, when a microphone gets stuck in his face. He look like he was in a hurry to me.
AND I mentioned at the beginning of the Tour that Bob Roll desperately needed a haircut, and we needed to enlist Bitch Kittie on that ASAP!! Do you think he's trying to pretend he's not losing his hair on top???

And a BIG "WAY TO GO" to the LA Times on Hiltzik's article! I read it last night and about feel off my chair; unbelievable!!

Theresa

We must send out a warning to any males that read this blog, please overlook our lusting and we really do have important stuff to say about cycling, Britney, Anna Nicole, etc. etc....!!

Theresa

OH, and regarding today's TT. All the guys KNOW that area. If there are any surprises, it should be because of other things, not the course. Tommy Danielson was sick Wed, and lost a lot of time, and was at the front, of the peleton yesterday, to pay back the team for his bad day. I either say Tony, or Tom right in the front!

I do not know HOW they throw their bikes ahead like that at the finish!! Paolo was really pleased, and did you see that HUGE bottle of wine?
Btw, what is it they are getting for winning a stage? The trophy looks like a picture..but of what? Cathy!!! Cathy!! please answer we you have a moment or two!!

Amy

He was really wearing all black with sunglasses? Any photos floating around out there? I'm just wondering...no reason :)
